Overview
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide based on the 4–10 fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), modified with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro to resist enzymatic breakdown. The modification removes the hormonal activity of ACTH while retaining neurotropic effects, making it a research tool for cognition and neuroprotection.
Published studies associate Semax with increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor, and examine its effects in models of ischemia, cognitive performance, and neuronal survival.
